The WATCHING Game
by Joy

The many ways where humans, animals and nature in its entirety are involved in the WATCHING game are at times a cautious and necessary survival mode of interest. At other times WATCHING is a delight and game by itself.

I like to refer to the latter to keep the subject light and entertaining.

We watch our children play and we smile. The joy of watching them having fun keeps us young and on our toes. After all, sometimes we are asked to join them in their fun.

Recently, after one of my best friends and I had admired the lush growing of our gardens, I asked her whether she would like to join me on the garden patio in our back yard or preferred to have a chat while sitting on the terrace near the house and the front garden.

Her spontaneous answer:

"Let's sit in the front and do some PEOPLE WATCHING"!

I bursted out laughing...I had not heard this phrase since I was a youngster living in my native country where at times my Grandmother would smilingly refer to the elderly and younger men sitting on a bench around the market square fountain in a village or standing on the steps of a church chatting with each other as

The WOMEN and GIRL WATCHERS!

Since our front terrace is more or less hidden by a lush tall evergreen shrub and tall perennial bushes and other plants as well as a tall evergreen tree and again other shrubs and plants and not too many people are ever passing by on our sidewalk about 20-25 feet away, I had never thought about any one thinking about PEOPLE WATCHING while relaxing on our front patio.

Speaking for myself, I am a dedicated " THREE B's WATCHER" .I love watching the Birds, Bees and Butterflies fluttering around our gardens. As well as occasionally viewing the stars and the fascinating lights of low flying airplanes at night. Not to forget the magnificent view of flying geese in V formation and occasionally admiring the awesome view of sea gulls in flight putting on a majestic performance of catching insects.

But "PEOPLE WATCHING" while relaxing on a kind of hidden private terrace is not really my idea of having fun. On the other hand watching people passing by in a busy area while chatting and relaxing with a friend sitting on a pub or restaurant terrace or patio sipping a cold drink or a cup of coffee may be fun. Especially if the terrace or patio is a market square with many multicultural vendors and flower stalls. The many hagglers and the laughs heard when someone has cut a deal may result in many smiles.

I am wondering how many WATCHERS of different strokes there are in our world.
