Precious Moments…
By
Gypsy Joy.
Dedicated to my Mom and Brother Frans.
May they Rest in Peace!
If I remember it well
It happened when I was eighteen
My brother than thirteen
Had taken a fancy to a pigeon blue
Like St.Francis he wanted his creatures to be happy, too.
All seemed to be going swell
The shed was soon made into a pigeon house
The dog trained to be still as a mouse
When passing the shed we had to tip-toe
And keep our voices low.
Hypnotized we were by this pigeon spell
It did us all good to see
That the pigeon couple seemed happy
What happened next
Is like being pigeon hexed.
It’s a bit complicated to tell
I was at the office working away
And Mom had gone shopping that day
When our pigeon lover got a splendid idea
Which would be disasterous for our Mommy.
I will not too long dwell
About unfortunate happenings in one’s life
But Mom being a widow and Mother of five
Must have been blown away
When she looked into the pigeon loft that midday.
Her bright young lad did not have a hard sell
As he enthusiastically showed his pigeon’s landing gear
And explained there was no other board near
Thus he had dismantled and borrowed
Her ironing board.
That evening when I rang the doorbell
Both told me the day’s pigeon story
It could have been a calamity
But Mom always understanding, inventive and capable
Was cheerfully doing her ironing on the kitchen table.
Thinking about my Mom and my late brother’s birthday on May 12th and the blue pigeon family story,
I got pigeons on my mind.
This brought me to search for the wonderful history of the
WWII “War of the Birds.”
I found it beautifully described on:
http://www.rpra.org/pigeon-history/pigeons-in-war/
As well as in the video:

The above exquisite pigeon links beautifully outline the intelligence and courage of a pigeon.
We often talk about dogs are man’s best friend and their courageous behaviour and rightfully admire them.
As well as the help and strength of magnificent horses in daily life and during wartime.
Not too often though we remember the pigeon messengers who assisted our troups and lost their lives in WWII.
Many may have been a Mom, too!
So, today is as good a day as ever to remember the animal moms, too!
To All Moms and Moms-to-be!
