Last evening I read a very interesting garden story by
Celia Laighton Thaxter
written in New Hampshire, USA in 1894 during the last year of the beautiful writer’s life (1835-1894) which was filled with a passion for nature and the Isles of Shoals in the USA where she grew up, especially Appledore Island where she also was buried close to her cottage. The very gifted writer and poet was fond of gardening since she was a little girl of 5 years old and loved her flowers as a sweet loving Mother loves her children. The writer’s deep love for her garden and her flowers can be found in the amazingly long, well-written, entertaining and educational garden story, published on the internet by

The web-script shows lovely art pictures and illuminations by Childe Hassam.
More info about the writer’s life may be found on

The island garden story is a true delight for the heart and soul.
The island garden design plus a list of the flowers is a bonus. Not to overlook the fascinating writing style and useful pointers on how to combat the garden destruction of a multitude of little creepy garden destroyers. Being a gardener myself with a deep love for nature and enormous admiration for wild and cultivated flowers, plants as well as trees and shrubs, I read the story to its very end. A true delight for the heart and soul. Speaking of my own feelings about the island garden story, it made me dream that night about the beautiful forests in Canada and many lovely island gardens by the coast where fairies and mermaids dance by the flickering light of the Coast Guard’s Lighthouse.
Out of curiosity I surfed YouTube. As always I was not disappointed.
Enjoy
