Sundays
by

When I was in kindergarten,
my Mom and Dad took my sister and I for a
Sunday afternoon ride
on their bikes to the country side.
It was always a very enjoyable outing.
They usually stopped at a village cafe where we played
on the swings and had a glass of lemonade.
Sometimes they would take us to a pasture where we
picked flowers and Dad would make
us a floral headband or
just a few flowers to pin into our hair, tell a story,
play on his mouth accordion, carve a tiny flute
to play on, whistle a tune or sing a song.
We picked field flowers for a bouquet to take home
and wrapped them in wet newspapers.
There was always a creek or ditch nearby.
Farm animals,
cats & dogs walked freely among the passersby.
Animals & people were so used to this
on Dutch country roads that there were seldom,
if ever, collisions to report.
