Once upon a time on New Year’s Eve day,

a young boy and his pooch living with his family in a log cabin in a Canadian forest, visited the general store in the village nearby.

As the boy went from one item to another, the shopkeeper noticed, that the boy kept going back and forth to look at a firecracker showing the Canadian flag.

Finally the boy and the little dog came to the counter.

Not with the firecracker but with two musical items. After he paid and received his receipt and a nickle and a dime in change, the shopkeeper said to him:

“I saw you looking at the firecracker lad.

It’s the last one and a Canadian top-notch firecracker, I can sell it to you for… a nickle and a dime.”

Sparkles of “his” soon to be Canadian top-notch firecracker dashed in front of the young boy’s wide open eyes as he gasped:

“You can! You will Sir.”

“Sure”, replied the shopkeeper as he fetched the Canadian top-notch firecracker. Putting it in the bag with the other two gifts, he handed the bag over to the young lad and whispered:

“laddie a Canadian top-notch firecracker is magic.

It will make any wish come true when the clock strikes twelve on New Year’s Eve!”

After the boy had paid he thanked the shopkeeper and dashed out of the store.

He could not believe his luck.

He and his pooch did not stop anywhere. They ran all the way home. At home the lad put the Canadian top-notch firecracker in a safe place.

He picked up his drum and went into the playroom to surprise his brother with the harmonica and his sister with the whistle. They were so excited they started rehearsing right away.

The children felt happy and sad at the same time.

Their Dad was in the Canadian Peace Corps overseas he could not celebrate the holidays with them this year.

After dinner the young lad showed the Canadian top-notch firecracker to his Mom and siblings and told them wat the shopkeeper had told him.

They all knew exactly what they were going to wish for…

their Dad’s homecoming in the New Year!

When the evening fell all happened as the boy had hoped. Their Mom’s singing attracted all the forest animals. The bonfire kept the housepets and everyone else cozy and warm. The wood sparks were a grand sight.

The Canadian top-notch firecracker

soared to heaven exactly when the clock struck twelve and amazed all with its exquisite sparks and colourful images.

The house pets and forest animals danced and hopped around

while the young musicians played their instruments and their Mom sung songs.

Suddenly, the young lad’s sister pointed at a family of forest mice

who scurried by to pick up some cake crumbs. They had to put their hands before their mouth to keep from laughing aloud so the family cats would not notice the little critters.

One of them was wearing a very big Christmas hat!

It was a most enjoyable New Year’s Eve!

His Mom was very proud of the young lad and his siblings.

When the trio’s Dad learned

about the funfilled musical New Year’s Eve celebration and the Canadian top-notch firecracker and the magic wish, he felt very happy. He wrote right away a letter to let them know how very proud he was of all four. He asked  them to join him in a musical gig as he would be home in a few months.

It’s said: “all is well that ends well”

when a Canadian top-notch firecracker reaches heaven to ring in the New Year”, said his Mom after she had read the good news about their Dad’s homecoming to her children.

The children joyfully agreed!

On New Year’s Day they watched together with their Mom, house pets and other friends:
