The Gentle Misty Blues…

Posted by on May 11, 2012

A “Wolf Tale”  from the 2012 “Canadian Magic Forest Tales”

By

Somewhere hidden in a dense  Canadian forest in Ontario lives a Misty Blue Wolf Pack.

They are known in this Nook of the Woods as the Gentle Misty Blues.

The colour of their shiny coats with different shades of ice-blue hues, layered with a translucent streak of a striking sky-blue color on a midsummer day is so sublime that one is speechless when one sees a Misty Blue wolf. Looking at these magnificent regal wolves makes you feel as if you are viewing the amazing ice-blue streaks of a floating Iceberg somewhere off the Newfoundland Coast.

Wherever the gentle Misty Blue wolves wander in the midst of the night,  the starry light transforms the magnificent blue hue of their coat in such a magical way that each time when they look at one another,  the wolves themselves are astonished about their handsome looks. It probably is a good thing that the Misty Blues usually only wander at night,  else they may soon disappear from this forest just like the beautiful white Unicorn.  As mythology has shown that’s exactly what happens to magnificent gentle mystical creatures.

One early evening, the Misty Blue pack was practising a howl serenade on top of a rocky area at the shores of their beloved forest when all of a sudden, the evening breeze carried a lovely tune over the lake. In the far distance the Misty Blues saw vaguely the silhouette of a lady walking along the shore. Having never heard before such a fine tune reaching their part of the shore many of the wolf pack wondered aloud about the songstress.

The leader of the pack and his female mate,  a slender young blue wolverine with a mane as shiny and soft as satin,  who bear the official name of

“Alpha Pair”

were both also intrigued to meet the lady singer and introduce her to the cubs. That`s when the Alpha pair of the Misty Blues decided a short meeting with the whole pack of wolves would be in order. It was agreed upon that all Misty Blues would leave that very evening on a journey to track down the songstress. The Alpha pair proposed that everyone should go incognito to avoid running into a conflict with aggressive animals. The Alpha leader of the Misty Blues also forbid the members of the pack to hunt on the journey as he did not want anyone to endanger the young cubs. He also gave strict orders to make sure that the cubs did not stray away from the pack. All agreed and covered themselves with branches from nearby trees, which made some look like a beautiful shrub with blue berries while others resembled the blue buds of a wildflower. The Misty Blues stayed as close to the dense forest trees as possible and treaded as lightly as a feather so they would not attract the  attention of other animals coming or going on the walking trail leading in and out of  their forest.

The evening had started to fall but it was still early. Most of the forest creatures start their hunting journey after darkness has fallen. The Misty Blues met only a couple of wild turkeys who were on their way home. After sometime they arrived at a camping place where adults and children had gathered for a barbeque event. Luckily everyone was chatting and having a good time sitting around a campfire so the campers did not notice the blue wolves in their disguise. As the evening went on the cubs got tired, thus the Alpha pair being the leaders of the Misty Blues, decided to call the tracking off till early morning. Quickly they removed their disguises and hid them near a large empty den where they were going to rest for the night. This den functioned as their cottage den while they were away from home. Hidden between a piece of dense forest and high rocks along the beautiful sandy shore of the lake they felt pretty safe. In the years gone by, the Misty Blues had placed, along the road, a mailbox with a portrait of two watch dogs painted on it. This turned out to be a splendid idea as most wild creatures upon spotting the faces of the dogs made sure to pass a large distance away from the mailbox.

All was quiet outside and inside it was nice and cozy.

The Misty Blues settled down for the night and some of the elders hummed softly a little lullaby.

Sleep the night away sweet cubs

Dream about new adventures

Sleep well so you will be happy and strong

For tomorrow will soon come along…

Early in the morning the Misty Blues got up and quickly moved along. They saw a squirrel eating his breakfast who almost bolted off the fence eager to tell them:

 “Scat… its my meal!”

Other creatures scattered out of the way and watched the strange group from a safe distance. The rest of the day many a forest creature was talking about the weird creatures they had seen in the early morning.  It was good that they did not recognize the gentle Misty Blues,  because there are often hunters luring in the woods. After a while the Misty Blues found to their surprise that they had wandered off into a

Haliburton Forest Park

where they soon met their Grey cousins who were just as surprised to see them as the gentle Misty Blues who had absolutely no idea that they had wandered so far away from their own territory. The Alpha leader of the Misty Blues told the elders the reason why they had disguised themselves. While the Haliburton Grey Wolves were admiring the clever disguise and exchanging titbits of news from their surroundings and their lifestyles, the Misty Blue Wolf cubs played happily with their new found cousins. The elders discussed the issue of the singing voice the Misty Blues had heard. While doing so they saw a lovely dame treading softly through the forest. She was humming a sweet song and spotted a happy grin on her smiling face.

“It must be the songstress”

whispered the lady mate of the Misty Blues Alpha leader. “Could be” whispered her mate back, but the Grey wolf Pack Alpha leader who overheard the whispering said softly, “I don’t think so. I never hear her singing, though she hums from time to time and always seems to grin. But, I do know that she paints and loves to visit Canada. This, I have heard from the Maple trees who have taken a fancy to her as the artist likes to collect and paint the Maple leaves when she sometimes visits in the Fall. The trees often speak fondly about her and always wonder what she may be painting when she is in her own country.”

The Grey Wolf Alpha leader continued: “this lovely lady is the artist who has painted in her homeland the most beautiful portrait of a blue wolf. Through the grapevine I have heard that the park may consider to buy the Blue Wolf painting or to order another Wolf painting from this Dutch painter.”

“Howl… Howl”

exclaimed the Alpha pair of the Misty Blues as the rest of the Wolves quickly joined the howling so excited they were. “What else has she painted about wolves? asked the Misty Blues Alpha leader .  “Hmmm… let me think… two brightly colored wolves… I tell you, that’s a tricky story,” continued the Grey Wolf  Alpha leader. “Just the other day I overheard the white pine trees telling that when a tricky white wolf would cast a glance at that wolf painting the wolves will come alive.  The artist has the painting hanging in the hallway of her painting castle. Thus it seems unlikely that a white wolf will cast it’s tricky eye on that wolf painting. But… you never know! However, should it ever happen, a new breed will be born as the wolves are painted red, orange, yellow and a touch of brown.

Whereupon the Grey and the Misty Blue wolves faced heaven to ask the Creator of heaven and earth for divine help as they bursted out in a long and loud howl. They hoped that in the land of the sweet lady artist, there would be a white wolf able to cast his tricky eyes on the brightly colored wolf painting. What fun it would be to meet and greet bright multicolored wolves from The Netherlands in our Canadian Forests during the Fall colors, they said with a grin. Needless to say the howling reached the ears of the people in the area who wondered what was going on at the wolf park. The happy howl of the wolves made them very curious. Many folks decided that it was time to visit the wolves again in the Haliburton forest to see what was new and how many new cubs were born.

The Alpha pair of the Gentle Misty Blues decided that it was best to forget tracking the songstress and to return home that night and to take a nap so everybody in their pack would be fit for the return trip. Naturally, the cubs wanted to keep on playing but after they were promised that their Grey Wolf cousins would visit them soon, they lay down for a nap while their elders sung them to sleep with a daytime lullaby.

Sleep my sweet sleep the day away

The Moon will soon rise

Dream about all you have seen today

When the Sun will rise

We will be again at our Happy Stay!

There were no disturbances on the trip home. All they saw this time was a deer, seemingly all alone in the forest, watching them from afar. The man in the moon kept a guided eye on his beloved Misty Blues who stayed as close to the high evergreens in the dense forest as possible. The cubs were not fussy either. All were very content. The man in the moon smiled as he looked down on the gentle Misty Blues who where just now entering their cozy den. Then he looked at the twinkling stars. When a cloud passed by he closed his eyes for a moment, smiled and mumbled very satisfied,

“it’s mighty peaceful in the forest tonight!”
