A Magic Tale from the 2013 Canadian Fairy Tales

Princess Aurora,
the Alaskan sparkling beauty whoes radiant looks seemed to rival the aurora borealis had recently moved into her royal igloo, not far from her father’s castle, near an Icelandic lake.
On Christmas Eve
when the sky exhibited its exquisite northern lights, she watched in awe the colourful sight and then had the pleasure to watch Santa in his sleigh flying by.
Whatever happened next no one can tell for sure, but princess Aurora suddenly was swept away. Luckily for the princess she always kept her army gear nearby, which consists out of a magnificent pair of butterfly wings and antlers. Thus the princess was able to navigate properly. To her surprise she found that she could not land nor determine where she was flying to and disappeared out of sight before anyone knew what had happened.
Without ado the King of the Northern Lights ordered one of princess Aurora’s ladies-in-waiting to stay outside her own igloo and keep watch so no vandals would move in or destroy the royal igloo while princess Aurora was missing.
When princess Aurora did not come back on Christmas morning, the King ordered everyone in his kingdom who owned a sleigh and sleddogs to search for his princess daughter. When the search did not bring any results, the King promised an important position in his ice palace to anyone who would find the princess.
For weeks thereafter the people of Aurora’s village spoke often about the northern light’s phenomenal, Santa’s flight on Christmas Eve and the King’s promise. Many young Alaskan men from America and Canada went out of their way with sleighdogs and sleds trying to find the princess, alas never achieving their goal. Each time when they thought they had found a trail that could lead to the princess, they were flabbergasted, as the trail led back to their own village, town or city. It did not matter in which country they lived.
It was very frustrating, bizarre and mysterious.
One day a scientist who lived in the Canadian Shield with a fondness of intellectual mice, and a knowledge of Alaska as well as the Northern Lights, thought he and his mice should try to unravel the Northern Lights mystery. After having been in touch with the King of the Northern Lights the Canadian fellow and his mice, joyfully and with much optimism, travelled to the royal igloo in Alaska.
After they arrived in the faery like igloo you could have called the happenings that followed an inspiration of the famous Toronto Murdock Mysteries. The scientist and has entourage went over the case with as much zeal as Murdock, Crabtree, the Inspector and Dr. Julia must have done an age or so ago. It was not before long that they reported to the King of the Northern Lights that they had found clues about princess Aurora’s disappearance, believed to have been vanished to Princess Royal Island.
“Well, well,” said the King of the Northern Lights while stroking his long beard, that island,
my young man, is about 520 kms north of Vancouver and assumed to be uninhabited. Also known as the
Great Bear Rain Forest
it can only be reached by boat or air.”
“You are right, your Majesty
and that may be the reason why none of the Alaska and other men could find the princess,” replied the scientist.
“But why kidnap my daughter?”
the King called out, in frustration raising his hands up in the air.
The Vancouver scientist shook his head and sighed deeply before answering: “I don’t know your Majesty, but if you will be so kind as to lend me one of your seaplanes, I and my mice will find princess Aurora if she is on that island.”
The following day the scientist and his crew were on the way to Princess Royal Island. All went smoothly until they were about to land. Then a heavy whirlwind blew the plane away from the shore’s landing point. A normal plane would have crashed but luckily they were on a seaplane. Since the whirlwind had blown the plane onto the waves, the scientist was able to steer the plane away from the rocky shore. Diving beneath the water the plane caught up with a gigantic purple faery fish.
“I did not know faery fish could be found here,” said the scientist to his mouse crew who were busily questioning and answering each other to establish what had happened. As it was late in the evening the scientist suggested to prepare a meal and to retire early for the night. The faery fish promised with his clan to keep guard through the night. Doing so the faery fish clan spent the night swimming in circles around the seaplane. In the morning when everyone in the seaplane awoke the waves were calm. They thanked the faery fish clan who promised to stay on watch nearby. The island seemed isolated and the scientist and his crew landed safely.
Soon they found out that they were not alone in this temperate rainforest as they were greeted by the Kermode a.k.a. “spirit” bear who introduced himself as “Spirit the Third.” They all had a candid talk about the dangers and controversy of the Northern Gate Way Pipelines project and what could happen. Everyone felt very uncertain about it. Finally the question came up why the seaplane and its crew had landed on Princess Royal Island.
When Spirit the Third heared about the sudden disappearance of princess Aurora who disappeared on Christmas Eve near her royal igloo during the season of the brilliant Northern Light nights, he became very concerned.”It may have something to do with the controversy about the Northern Gate Way Pipelines project” he said with a frown. “Many here and beyond have been concerned about the project for years and now being 2013 things are not going the way we would like to.”
“True”, agreed the scientist” but we are here to see what we can do for princess Aurora and the King of The Northern Lights. If we are on the right trail and when we have found princess Aurora, perhaps we shall know more.”
They all agreed and off they went with Spirit the Third leading the way hoping that they finally were on the right track. Lo and behold they were, to the surprise of all involved even the
lovely princess Aurora
whom they found in a cave taking care of a wounded bear cub. In the company of the princess was a magician bear who introduced himself as
” Magician Moon Bear”.
As they found out Moon Bear was the culprit who kidnapped princess Aurora to take care of the young bear cub.
“You kidnapped the Northern Lights princess!” exclaimed Spirit The Third.
“What were you thinking Moon Bear?” Princess Aurora glanced at Moon Bear and quickly said to Spirit the Third:
“Moon Bear did not have a choice. Spirit Bear.”
“Moon Bear was about to fall asleep when one of the winter stars alerted him that the little bear cub was badly hurt. If the magician had not found me the little bear cub may not have survived. The little cub was very sick with a high fever and nothing what Moon Bear tried to do for him worked. The cub and the magician needed my assistance. However, the good news is that the little cub is recovering nicely and I should be able to leave in a few days. We will find someone to take care of the little cub and then Moon Bear will fly me back home.”
The scientist shook his head and replied:
” I am sorry princess Aurora but I promised your father the King, that I and my mice will bring you safely home to him. I cannot break this promise, but if you wish, Moon Bear can come with us, too.”
So it was decided and a few days later the scientist, his mice and princess Aurora and Moon Bear, bade the little cub and Spirit Bear the Third good bye and away they flew back to the royal igloo and the King’s castle near the Icelandic Lake. The return flight was quick and without incidents thanks to the magic wand of the Magician Moon Bear.
The king of the Northern Lights
was so happy to have the princess back home again that he forgave Moon Bear right away after princess Aurora told her father the true story. The king had just given consent to the judge to put his daughter’s kidnapper for the rest of his life in the royal dungeon and to throw the key away. When Moon Bear heared that he became as white as the Alaskan snow.
“You are a spirit bear now”
laughed princess Aurora as she hugged Moon Bear till the natural colour of his coat had returned to normal. Princess Aurora really liked the bear magician. So did the king and everyone else. The king was so proud of the two that he told everyone in the palace
“Magician Moon Bear is a hero and my daughter a heroine.
They both saved the life of a little bear cub from Princess Royal Island.”
“Not to forget the Canadian scientist and his mice team, Your Majesty,” added Moon Bear,
“and Spirit bear and the faery fish” smiled princess Aurora.
“I see” grinned the king, we will have to royally entertain everyone”.
Whereupon the king clapped in his hands as he called out:
“Jester, announce to all in the land,
that there will be a ball in the castle a week from tomorrow and everyone in the land and beyond the Northern Lights is invited to attend.”
